The official handover ceremony for the donation of 17,000 testing kits and 50,000 face masks valued at 4,600,000 Rand(300,000 US dollars) by the Government of the Republic of Korea was held at the National Department of Health on Wednesday, 25 November 2020. The donation was made in assistance to the Covid-19 pandemic response in the Republic of South Africa.
On 24 April 2020, the South Korean President, His Excellency Moon Jae-in and the South African President, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa had a telephonic conversation, where the two leaders agreed to co-operate in the fight against Covid-19. The South Korean government subsequently prepared various personal protective equipment (testing kits, face masks and disinfectants) to assist the South African government and people defeat the Covid-19 pandemic.
Earlier, the South Korean government had donated 90,000 face masks to help local medical staff, soldiers and frontline workers. The South Korean businesses also took part and donated 100,000 face masks, 1.2 tons of disinfectants and 10,000 testing kits.
The South Korean Ambassador, Dr Jong-dae Park stressed the importance of strong global cooperation and solidarity in combating Covid-19 and hoped that this donation from South Korea would make a contribution to help strengthening the South African government’s response towards the pandemic. He further wished that amicable bilateral cooperation between the two countries would continue.
