Turkey and South Africa strengthen relations in Health

It is on the 29th of October in 1923 that modern Turkey was born out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire, following a war of independence. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was elected the first president of the Republic of Turkey by unanimous vote.

Mrs Elif Çomoğlu Űlgen, Ambassador of Turkey (pictured) hosted a reception at Turkish House in Pretoria, to celebrate the 96th anniversary of the founding of modern Turkey.

Ambassador Űlgen said that she was pleased to host the event at a time when South Africa – Turkey relations were flourishing in various fields including health, defence and tourism.

Ambassador Űlgen, that evening, saw off Dr Zweli Mkhize, South Africa’s Health Minister, who participated in the Health Information Management System Society Health IT Conference and Exhibition in Istanbul, Turkey. While there Dr Mkhize met with his counterpart, Dr Fahrettin Koca as South Africa and Turkey continue to strengthen bilateral relations in Health.

Trade between the two countries currently stands at $2 billion and Ambassador Űlgen said that there is room to increase this. Tourism has increased facilitated by daily flights to Turkey.

Speaking at the function Ms Linda Shongwe, Chief Director at Dirco said that there is an increase in commercial and business to business activities between the two countries made possible by the Joint Economic Commission.

Guests were treated to delectable Turkish cuisine and as souvenirs left with lemon tree saplings, the lemons of which will one day remind guests of the growing and fruitful Turkish – South African relations.
