The Petronio Álvarez Afro-Colombian Music Festival, the most significant Afro culture festival in Latin America, is making its inaugural visit to WOMAD in South Africa. Over its 27 years of existence, the festival has established itself as a meeting place where Afro-Colombian heritage and its diverse expressions take center stage for six days. Held annually in Cali, Colombia, every August since 1997, the festival brings together approximately 600,000 people to celebrate music, cuisine, traditional beverages, and the ancestral knowledge of Colombian Pacific communities. This event annually attracts more than 200 exhibitors representing these traditions, hailing from 50 towns on the Pacific coast of Colombia.

In a world marked by geopolitical complexities and economic interdependencies, the importance of strong diplomatic ties between nations cannot be overstated. One such dynamic partnership that has steadily grown in significance is the relationship between the Republic of South Africa and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Mr Sultan Abdullah Al Lwihan Al Angari, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to South Africa and South African Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Dlamini Zuma outlined this bond of friendship in their remarks at the celebration of Saudi Arabia’s 93rd National Day in Pretoria, South Africa.

As a follow-up to the December 2021 Seminar for African Artists on Silencing the Guns, the African Union (AU) Commission in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), convened a five-day virtual training for another cohort of artists from 18 to 22 September 2023, under the theme: 'Leveraging Arts for Peace'. The training was grounded in the belief that Art helps prevent conflict in communities by raising awareness and inspiring tolerance around societal differences.
